| Voluntary amalgamations with the district of Pirie Council, founded in 1892, took place in 1996 followed by a further amalgamation with the Crystal Brook / Redhill Council in 1997, forming the Port Pirie Regional Council, with a population of 17074 people and covering an area of 1761 square kilometers, including the townships of Crystal Brook, Redhill, Koolunga Napperby, Wandearah, Warnertown and Mundoora. The City of Port Pirie celebrated it's 50th Anniversary of Proclamation as South Australia's first Provincial city on the 26th February 2003. Port Pirie prides itself in it's long history of sporting achievements and Council has given strong financial support to the new John Pirie Secondary School gymnasium, hockey and sports complex, both of a national standard, the tennis complex, acknowledged as the best outside Adelaide, and the best harness racing track in South Australia.
