Entrance Improvements & Shared Walking/Cycling Paths

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on Council’s Entrance Improvements/Shared Walking & Cycling Paths Project during the community consultation phase. Council considered the feedback and given the positive response, we have now turned this vision into reality!

Project Summary

Port Pirie Regional Council planned to add to its network of connected shared walking and cycling paths across Port Pirie. Providing attractive, well maintained spaces for walking and cycling will contribute towards community wellbeing and improve the aesthetics and presentation of Port Pirie.

These works also compliment a wider Greening Strategy including the upgrade of the presentation of Port Pirie’s entrances and creating a positive first impression for the anticipated increase of visitors from the Southern Flinders National Park and Silver to Sea Way projects, planned to be operational in late 2023.

Project Works

Works commenced on 8 March 2022, which involved removing poor quality trees and shrubs along Warnertown and Three Chain Road. These were replaced with new trees, ground covers and other plantings as part of our overall Greening Strategy.
The next stage of works involved the construction of shared walking / cycling paths at the following locations:

Stage 1: within the median on the eastern side of Three Chain Road from Simpson Road to Solomontown Beach (1.3km of 3m wide asphalt path)

Stage 2: on the verge of Pelham Road to The Terrace and Pelham Road, north along Three Chain Road to Kingston Road (1.8km of 2.5m wide crusher path) which connects to the concrete path in front of St Mark’s College Benedict campus.

A shared path was also constructed on Beach Road.
