Butlers Bridge to be upgraded
Butlers Bridge is located on Old Broughton Road, Wandearah (approximately 10km south of the outskirts of Port Pirie) and was built during the 1940’s. Due to the existing condition of the structure, the bridge currently has a 10-tonne load limit applied.
Council has now obtained joint funding through the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program and works are planned to commence on site early next week to construct a new 15m span bridge that it suitable for road train access which means the current load limit will no longer apply. Council recognises that the direct timing of the works is less favourable due to seasonal works and the current 10-tonne limit restricts its usage to light vehicles, however due to manufacture and supply delays on certain precast components of the bridge and contractor availability, there have been challenges during the planning process.
It is anticipated that works will be completed by late June to early July 2022. During this period there will be no access through the site and users will need to follow detour signage.
Council appreciates the community’s cooperation during these works and we look forward to providing a safer, stronger and more sustainable structure for road users in the near future.
