Free Native Plants for the Port Pirie Region
Native Plant Giveaway with Costa: 12 October 2025

What an incredible event we had in Port Pirie for our most recent Native Plant Giveaway!
Approximately 5000 native seedlings were distributed to residents of the Port Pirie Regional Council on Sunday 12 October at Woodward Park.
This event was combined with the KIDtober festivities to produce an exciting, family-friendly event that went beyond greening to foster community connection and wellbeing.
The Native Plant Giveaway featured n a very Special Guest in Costa Georgiadis, renowned host of Gardening Australia, who joined residents to celebrate local biodiversity and sustainable gardening!
Costa met attendees for photos and conversations, answered gardening questions, conducted planting demonstrations and shared his passion for native plants.
Other family friendly activities included a nature-inspired Scavenger Hunt, pot painting fun and refreshments.
How You Can Help With The Port Pirie Greening Program

The Port Pirie Native Plant Giveaway is funded by the Government of South Australia as part of a four-year partnership for greening Port Pirie – one of a range of measures being undertaken by the South Australian government to reduce and prevent exposure to lead in Port Pirie.
The Native Plant Giveaway provides:
- Six free native plants per household (randomly selected from a range of hardy, locally adapted species) were provided to help beautify our community, reduce airborne lead dust, increase biodiversity and is also a great opportunity to introduce native flora into your garden.
These native plants are selected for their beauty, drought tolerance and ability to support local wildlife. Over 9,000 native species will be distributed this year alone as part of Council’s commitment to expanding green spaces across the region.
The event built on the success of previous giveaways held in April 2024 and May 2025, which saw thousands of plants distributed and strong community engagement.
Native Plant Giveaway for Businesses & Organisations
As part of our latest Native Plant Giveaway through the Port Pirie Greening Program, Port Pirie Regional Council offered native plant seedlings to local businesses and organisations!
We’re passionate about seeing our community flourish, as well as reducing airborne lead dust, and this initiative is a fantastic opportunity to kickstart vibrant, sustainable gardens across Port Pirie.
