Illegal Dumping and Littering

Port Pirie Regional Council has a zero tolerance to any illegal dumping and littering within the Council area. All reported incidents are investigated and the offending parties are liable to prosecution. Council has had a number of successful prosecutions in recent times.

Council encourages residents to report all incidents of illegal dumping by calling (08) 8633 9720

Illegal dumping of unwanted household items is a significant financial, environmental and social problem. Port Pirie Regional Council incurs considerable costs every year for the investigation, collection and disposal of illegally dumped material. Dumped rubbish can degrade the environment, cause health hazards and lower property values if areas become less attractive to prospective landowners.

Illegal dumping is an offence under the Local Government Act 1993 and The Environmental Protection Act 1993 and significant fines apply to those caught dumping. Council's General Inspectors are vigilant in investigating illegal dumping and littering and are continually monitoring known hot spots.
