Barking Dogs

Barking Dogs

Barking is a dog’s natural form of communication although when a dogs barking becomes excessive and persistent then this can start to cause issues for those around them. As an owner it is important to recognise that your dogs excessive and persistent barking can be caused by:

  • Health issues
  • Boredom
  • Seperation Anxiety

As an owner it is important to recognise that your dogs excessive barking can cause issues between neighbours and excessive dog barking complaints are amongst the most frequent complaints Council receives.

If you are having issues with your neighbour’s dog excessively barking it could be a good idea to firstly have a respectful conversation with the owner to find a solution, however if this does not work you may like to keep a ‘barking diary’ for a 2 week period and keep a record of when the dog is barking and how long the dog is barking for, along with any details as to what may be triggering the dog. It is important to ensure you keep the diary as accurate as possible as this will then provide us with the required evidence to then approach the owner to discuss the complaint and in some cases it will help us initiate enforcement action again the dog owner. Once you have completed your ‘barking diary’ this can then either be provided to Council at our Port Pirie or Crystal Brook Offices, emailed to developmentandregulation@pirie.sa.gov.au, or by attaching your document via a customer request at NewCSForm | Port Pirie Regional Council. From here,  it will then be passed onto one of our General Inspectors for investigation and any necessary follow up actions.
