Street Trees
Tree Planting
Council is committed to greening its streets and carries out planting in the cooler months each year. Not all locations are suitable for planting, so each individual request will be assessed and if the location is suitable, it will be placed on a planting program to be carried out at a later date.
A list of suitable tree species is available for the resident to select their preferred species from, however the species planted will be Council's decision and may differ from the resident's choice as Council will choose a tree that fits with the existing streetscape and conditions
Tree Removal
Council endeavors to preserve its street trees where possible and all requests for removal will be assessed and only carried out if deemed necessary.
Tree Trimming
Council has a tree trimming program working 1 day in each zone and it takes approximately 4 weeks to return to the same zone (if there are no unforeseen delays).
Council will not deviate from the program unless the request is a matter of public safety or other urgent need as determined by Council.
Only Council can perform maintenance on street trees, however if the street tree is amongst the overhead power lines, this is SA Power Networks responsibility and should be reported directly to them on 13 12 61 or SAPN - Contact us (sapowernetworks.com.au)
Trees in Private Property
Council does not perform trimming, removal or any maintenance of trees within private property. All tree related issues are the responsibility of the property owner and Council cannot get involved with a tree matter between Neighbours. For further information on your rights and responsibilities, an information booklet "Trees and the Law" is available from Council's Administration Centre at 115 Ellen Street, Port Pirie or you can view it online Trees and the law(lsc.sa.gov.au)
If a tree from private property is protruding out blocking safe access to Council's roads or footpaths, then Council can issue the property owner/resident with a notice to trim the protruding vegetation within 14 days.
