Take the Pledge to send Less to Landfill

Did you know

Recent bin inspections found that many red lidded household waste bins were overfull with materials which could be recycled or mulched. Do you know what items can be recycled in your yellow lidded bin, or mulched via your green lidded bin?

What can you do?

Take the online pledge below to commit to sending less to landfill, by using your yellow and green lidded bins for recyclable and compostable materials. Once you have taken the pledge, we will send you a sticker to place on your red lidded bin to show everyone you are committed to reducing landfill. You will also go in the draw to win a gift box from the Tourism and Arts Centre, or a voucher to the Waste Transfer Station (valued at $30).

Competition Timeline and Structure:
Pledges received via the online form will be organised by KESAB into groups defined by collection day. Each week of the competition period (April - June), a collection day will be selected at random, with up to 10 households on that collection day chosen to have their bins visually inspected. Bin inspections will be conducted by Cleanaway collection truck drivers, Council staff and or KESAB. The purpose of a bin inspection is to determine whether correct bin usage has occurred at the selected property.
Correct bin usage will be determined by no visible signs of recycling or garden organics in the waste (red lidded) bin, and no sign of contamination in the recycling (yellow lidded) or organics (green lidded) bins (whichever is presented at the time). The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Each week of the competition, the first 5 of the selected houses inspected who are deemed by the judges to be using their bins correctly will be eligible for a prize. Once 5 winning households have
been selected from the 10 chosen in that inspection week, inspections will cease and the remainder of chosen households for that week will not be inspected. Only households presenting bins with the ‘I’m Sending Less to Landfill’ sticker will be included in the
judging, and therefore be eligible for a prize. Winning households will be awarded a voucher which must be taken to the Port Pirie Regional Council Office, 115 Ellen Street, Port Pirie SA 5540, to be redeemed for their chosen prize (either a gift box from the Tourism and Arts centre, or a voucher to the Waste Transfer Station (valued at $30). The Council reserves the right to request prize winners provide proof of identity and/or proof of occupancy before claiming any prize. If suitable proof cannot be provided, the prize will be forfeited.
In the event that correct bin usage is not identified in relation to any bins inspected in a week, or over the competition period, no prize will be awarded.
Bin inspections will take place between March and April 2023. Further rounds of the competition may be conducted at the discretion of Council. If so, dates will be published on the Council website.
