2026 Port Pirie Regional Council Australia Day Awards Announced
Port Pirie Regional Council is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2026 Australia Day Awards, which recognise outstanding contributions to the local community by individuals and an event that has made a significant contribution, both economically and socially, to the region.
The 2026 Australia Day Award recipients for Port Pirie are:
Citizen of the Year: Jenny Lewis (joint winner)
Jenny Lewis has devoted her life to caring for others and improving community welfare. Starting as a nurse at Pirie Hospital at just 16, she later became a Victim Support Counsellor—a role she still volunteers in today. For over 25 years, Jenny has led the Domestic Violence Action Group, championing awareness and introducing initiatives like the Red Bench project.
Jenny has also served as a Justice of the Peace and court companion, offering vital support to those in need. Jenny’s tireless commitment to helping others makes her a truly deserving recipient of this honour.
Citizen of the Year: Mark Eckert (joint winner)
Mark Eckert has dedicated more than four decades to serving the Port Pirie community through Scouting and local initiatives. Since joining Scouts in 1981, Mark has held numerous leadership roles, including Group Leader, District Commissioner, and Napperby Campsite Manager, where he has overseen major improvements. His commitment has earned him multiple honours, including life membership and prestigious awards such as the Silver Kangaroo.
Beyond Scouting, Mark has contributed significantly to the Royal Port Pirie Yacht Club, serving as Commodore for six years and leading key upgrades and community events. His tireless efforts in youth development, volunteer projects, and local fundraising reflect an unwavering dedication to enhancing community life.
Congratulations to Mark Eckert on this well-deserved recognition as Joint Citizen of the Year.
Community Event of the Year: Bollywood Night
Now in its fourth year, Bollywood Night is a vibrant partnership between CJ1 Indian Curry and St Marks Parish, celebrating Port Pirie’s rich cultural diversity and strong community spirit. Drawing around 170 attendees, the event champions inclusion, connection, and pride in our multicultural community.
Through music, dance, and delicious food, Bollywood Night perfectly embodies the Australia Day values of unity, respect, and the celebration of all cultures that shape our nation.
“I’m so proud to announce the outstanding winners of this year’s Port Pirie Regional Council Australia Day Awards. Each year we receive incredible nominations, and this year was no different. Our joint Citizens of the Year, Jenny Lewis and Mark Eckert, truly exemplify lifelong dedication to community,” said Mayor Leon Stephens.
“I’m equally delighted that Bollywood Night has been recognised as Event of the Year. This year’s celebration was vibrant, inclusive, and exceptionally well organised. Congratulations to all our winners – I look forward to celebrating with you on Australia Day,” Mayor Stephens added.
These awards will be presented at the Port Pirie Australia Day Celebrations to be held on Monday 26 January 2026 at Solomontown Beach. More information about this event will be available soon.
