Australian Army Collaborate with Council

Published 30th April 2021

Port Pirie Regional Council recently formed a relationship with the Australian Army Combat Service Support Battalion with the intent of collaborating on a number of community engagement and youth activities primarily focusing on the indigenous community within Port Pirie over the coming years.

Around 60 Australian Army personnel will be present in Port Pirie next month to carry out an adventure training activity.

The Army will be supporting local businesses during their time in the region, including staying overnight at the Napperby Scout Camp, using locals suppliers, and working with the Rowing Club, Yacht Club and potentially SES.

While they are here, they will collaborate with John Pirie Secondary School students and the Port Pirie Regional Council.

The Army, indigenous JPSS students, and the Council will work together on Monday 3rd May to revitalise the Warnertown entrance to Port Pirie by planting native trees and shrubs suitable for our climatic conditions. The students will have the opportunity to share their knowledge on the indigenous plants to be used. Aboriginal secondary education transition officer Deb Black, from John Pirie Secondary School, will be offering a Welcome to Country at 10:00am.

The Army will be conducting an adventure training day with John Pirie Secondary School students at Solomontown Beach on Thursday 6th May. Vicki Welgraven will be guest speaking from 2:00pm.

Port Pirie Regional Council is excited about the ongoing collaboration with the Australian Army and John Pirie Secondary School, and is eager to see the outcomes of this and future projects.
