Celebrating International Day of People With Disability
Port Pirie Regional Council recently helped to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability with a series of inclusive events.
In conjunction with the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing’s Club of the Future Program (Heart of the Community focus area), ‘Come and Try’ sessions were held at the Port Pirie Bowling Club and Port Pirie Croquet Club on 7 December where participants tried their hand at lawn bowls and croquet.
This was a fantastic opportunity for local clubs to provide access for people with disability and highlighted the potential for a lawn bowling program with specialised equipment.
‘Wheelienet’ wheelchair basketball sessions hosted by Novita were also held at the John Pirie Secondary School where students were able to participate in a fun and interactive program.
Students also learned about injury prevention, the everyday issues and challenges facing people living with disability and sporting opportunities for people living with disability.
A projection show was also held at the City Park Projection space including a collection of photographs provided by Bedford Group Port Pirie’s talented clients. The show will continue to show nightly throughout December.
To cap off the celebrations, an inclusive Pool Party supported by Blue Light South Australia is being held on 19 January 2023 at the Port Pirie Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
Further information on this event can be found via Council’s website and social media pages. More information will be available soon.
These activities align with the values of Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, particularly to support raising of disability awareness by encouraging positive community attitudes.
