Cemetery Strategy Consultation

Published 18th September 2023

Port Pirie Regional Council is reaching out to the various religious and cultural groups in our community to ensure all are represented within our local cemeteries.

Council’s draft Cemetery Strategy 2023-2033 is now open for public consultation. This document aims to:

  • Ensure our cemeteries continue to have space available to provide options for burials/cremations into the future (10-50 years).
  • Respond to evolving community preferences regarding burial and cremation, natural burials and specific religious and cultural practices.
  • Ensure cemetery provision adapts to environmental challenges such as a changing climate.

There are 10 cemeteries located within the Port Pirie Regional Council municipality. Council manages 8 of these, with Port Pirie and Crystal Brook cemeteries the largest.

At Council’s July Ordinary Meeting, allocation of land at the Port Pirie Cemetery was approved for Muslim burials. Through its Cemetery Strategy, Council would also like to hear from members of other religious and cultural groups within our community that have specific needs regarding cemeteries, burials and cremations to ensure all are represented within the Strategy.
