Cemetery Street Naming Tribute to Connor and Meschke Families
Port Pirie Regional Council is proud to honour the longstanding contributions of the Connor and Meschke families to the local community and surrounding areas by naming two streets within the Port Pirie Cemetery:
- Connor Drive (located near the Cemetery entrance)
- Meschke Avenue (located near the War Graves, at the rear of the Cemetery)
This initiative follows a heartfelt request from community member Joy Mezzino, who advocated for the recognition of her late brother, Kevin Connor, and the compassionate service provided by both families over many decades.
Mrs Mezzino expressed the following sentiment:
“Any of you who have lost loved ones over the years know just how important these guys are and how they show such compassion. Nothing is ever too much and they make the process so seamless.”
The Connor and Meschke families have served the Port Pirie region for over 80 years, offering funeral services with professionalism, empathy and care during the most difficult times in people’s lives. Their legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of the community, and this gesture serves as a lasting tribute to their dedication.
Naming streets after individuals or families who have made significant contributions to society is a tradition that not only honours their achievements but also strengthens the identity and history of the community.
Mayor Leon Stephens shared his thoughts on the tribute:
“This recognition is about honouring the quiet strength and unwavering kindness shown by the Connor and Meschke families over many decades. Their support has meant so much to so many, and naming these streets is a way for our community to say thank you and ensure their legacy lives on.”
Council will further consider appropriate names for the remaining five unnamed roads within the Port Pirie Cemetery at a future Council Workshop.
Port Pirie Regional Council extends its gratitude to the Connor and Meschke families for their enduring service and compassion and looks forward to continuing to honour those who have shaped our community.
