Consultation Open for Drage Street Traffic Management Improvements

Published 20th November 2024

Limiting a section of Drage Street to one-way traffic is one of several measures proposed to improve safety and access around St Mark’s College.

Port Pirie Regional Council has been working with St Mark’s College over several years to investigate solutions to improve traffic management in and around the Bosco and Benedict Campuses of the school. This includes the formation of a Traffic Management Committee comprising representatives of the school leadership and staff, members of the School Board and Council.

Council is undertaking public consultation to limit traffic in Drage Street to one-way in the westerly direction from the St Mark’s College Benedict Campus car park exit towards Glasson Street, with parking on the southern side. The parking would be signposted as a drop off/pick up zone for school hours with no restrictions out of school hours. Glasson Street and Ian Street would remain two-way.

If the changes are supported, they are expected to be implemented by the end of January 2025 in time for the start of the school year.

The Drage Street proposal is now available to view on Council’s website at: www.pirie.sa.gov.au/noticeboard/consultation. Online submissions can be made using the feedback form located at the above link.

The closing date for submissions is Tuesday 17 December 2024 at 5.00pm.

Written submissions can also be mailed to Port Pirie Regional Council, PO Box 45 (115 Ellen Street), Port Pirie SA 5540, emailed to: council@pirie.sa.gov.au or delivered in person to 115 Ellen Street, Port Pirie.

Other proposed measures being considered by the traffic management committee include:

  • Closing the informal parking area adjacent to St Mark’s College Benedict Campus on Three Chain Road, adjacent to the intersection of Wandearah Road;
  • Contact the Local Member and State Government to request further consideration be given to relocating the 60km/h zone further south along Three Chain Road; and
  • Extending the school zone adjacent to St Mark’s College Bosco Campus up to 100metres south along The Terrace and additional yellow lines marked along The Terrace to provide easier access and egress for buses.

Improvements would be made in a staged approach over the next 12 to 24 months, subject to funding.
