Council responds to TLAP Extension

Port Pirie Regional Council is pleased with the announcement from the State Government and Nyrstar to extend the Targeted Lead Abatement Program (TLAP) for 10 years.

TLAP is committed to reducing lead emissions and lowering the average blood-lead levels in the community, particularly in children. The program was originally scheduled to end in May 2024 but the extension means the program will now continue until 2034.

Mayor Leon Stephens said Port Pirie Regional Council recognised the important work of TLAP needed to continue beyond 2024 and has been working hard to advocate for this with the State Government, particularly Minister for Energy and Mining Dan van Holst Pellekaan.

“Council is so committed to extending the lifetime of TLAP that we listed this as one of the nine priorities for our region in our State Election Platform document, which was circulated to all candidates for the seat of Stuart in the 2022 State Election,” Mayor Stephens said.

“This will be a transformational change over a sustained period of time and Council looks forward to taking our part alongside our partners.”
