Court Sports Facility Initial Concepts

Published 4th March 2025

Port Pirie Regional Council is investigating a multi-use court-based sports facility to build upon the high-quality sporting venues in Port Pirie, including the Port Pirie Sports Precinct and Aquatic & Leisure Centre.

Various court-based sporting groups have approached Port Pirie Regional Council in recent years for financial and other support to upgrade their playing surfaces and assist with declining volunteer numbers. A shared facility could help to address these concerns while providing options to attract major sporting events to the region.

Council has met with representatives from court-based sports, including netball, basketball, tennis and volleyball, to discuss the concept of a shared facility and initial requirements for playing surfaces and facilities. From this, a consultant has prepared several early concept designs containing the stated requirements and using the Port Pirie Tennis Association site on The Terrace as a basis for the concept design.

It is important to note that this is a very early concept design that will be used as the basis for further discussion with the sporting groups – it is not the final design. The site indicated is not necessarily the preferred location but was identified to assist with the concept design process.

Mayor Leon Stephens said the project would contribute to community wellbeing through the provision of quality sporting and recreational facilities.

“Port Pirie Regional Council is in the very early stages of planning for this multi-use courts-based facility but there is already great excitement about the benefits this would have for our local sporting bodies as well as opportunities to attract more high-level sporting events,” Mayor Stephens said.

“Our next step is to present these early concept designs to the relevant sporting clubs and associations and to consult with them to ensure we have a facility that meets our sports community’s needs while being financially sustainable.”

Port Pirie Regional Council will need to seek grant funding to support the project coming to fruition. Council will continue to have discussions with sporting groups to refine the concept and encourages any other interested sporting clubs or associations who wish to contribute ideas and suggestions to contact Council on 8633 9718.
