Disability Access & Inclusion Plan Adopted
Port Pirie Regional Council is proud to release its inaugural Disability Access & Inclusion Plan.
The Plan was adopted at last night’s Council Meeting following a two-stage community consultation process which included surveys and a public forum.
The Disability Access & Inclusion Plan (DAIP) is a State Government requirement under the Disability Inclusion Act as well as a long overdue opportunity for Council to actively seek input from the community to better identify their challenges when accessing council services.
The Disability Access and Inclusion Plan has been prepared based on input from the community. The responses contained clear messages about matters that should be addressed. These included getting to know more about the disability sector, raising community awareness of the challenges faced, reviewing the condition of footpaths, accessible car parks, public toilets and council buildings.
Themes to emerge that have been incorporated into the Plan are:
- Inclusive communities for all
- Leadership and collaboration
- Accessible communities
- Learning and employment
Mayor Leon Stephens said Council wants to ensure all people in our community are given the opportunity to live their life to the full.
“We recognise that there potentially many improvements that could be done as it’s essential that facilities and events are accessible, that our programs are inclusive and that we are providing and encouraging equality at every opportunity,” Mayor Stephens said.
The Plan can be found on Council’s website:https://www.pirie.sa.gov.au/document-library/strategic-documents/disability-access-and-inclusion-planHard copies are available from Council by request (contact 8633 9777).
Council also plans to have the document available in alternate formats soon.
