Finalists for Australian Resource Recovery Innovation Award
Port Pirie Regional Council is thrilled to be named as a finalist in the Australian Resource Recovery Awards for our Weekly FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) Transition.
These national awards recognise those that are recovering more, extending the life of resources, mitigating carbon and making lasting change for the community, business and the planet while paving the way to help reach Australia's target of 80% resource recovery by 2030.
Council’s Weekly FOGO transition was introduced in March 2024 across the Council region, with an average of 67% of all material gathered from our kerbside collection service currently being diverted from landfill.
This is a great result which places Port Pirie Regional Council amongst the best in the state for diverting waste away from landfill and improving our region’s environmental impact.
“Being named as one of only two finalists for this prestigious Australia-wide Innovation Award is a tremendous honour. It highlights the success of our weekly FOGO system and its positive impact on both our community and the environment,” stated Mayor Leon Stephens.
“Introducing this program was challenging, but the Council believed it would be a valuable step towards saving the planet. Now, the results speak for themselves,” Mayor Stephens added.
“The implementation of our FOGO service has significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill, allowing us to repurpose organic waste into compost for food production. By offering a weekly FOGO service alongside a fortnightly landfill service, we encourage the community to dispose of more food waste correctly, fostering a more sustainable future,” said Mayor Stephens.
The award winners will be announced at the official 2024 Australian Resource Recovery Conference dinner to be held at Ayers House this evening, Wednesday 16 October 2024.
