Port Pirie Regional Council is pleased to add the name of a significant Crystal Brook family to the Approved List of Road Names to be used for naming of a future new road.

Hurst has been added to Council’s list of approved street names to be used to name a future new road in Crystal Brook, recognising the contributions of John Henry Hurst and his three sons Allen, Doug and Rex Hurst.

John Hurst moved to Crystal Brook around the end of World War Two, taking over an existing blacksmith business on the corner of Darbon Terrace and Forgan Street. Together with his two older sons Allen and Doug, John Hurst formed the blacksmith and engineering business which became known as JH Hurst and Sons.

The business served the communities of Crystal Brook and the surrounding district for nearly 40 years. In the early years, John Hurst also provided horseshoe services to the working horses in the area. Younger son Rex Hurst joined the business in the early years providing carpentry services.

All three of the Hurst sons married local women and together, they raised a total of 10 children, all of whom were educated at Crystal Brook Primary School.

Allen, Doug and Rex Hurst were active members of the Crystal Brook EFS (later CFS) as well as serving the St Silas Anglican Church for most of their lives.

The Hurst men were well-known for their service in Crystal Brook which included the Crystal Brook Bowling Club, Crystal Brook Golf Club, Crystal Brook Football Club and St John Ambulance. Allen and Doug Hurst were also involved in establishing the Wilochra Home for the Aged.

Port Pirie Regional Council maintains a list of approved road names and periodically undertakes a public call for names to be added to the approved list. Road names may include fallen servicemen and women, long term resident families in the community and any person who has achieved state, national and international recognition.
