It's Play Time at Woodward Park!

Published 31st August 2023

The new Woodward Park nature play area has now been completed and is open for the community to explore and enjoy.

This project was part of a unique collaboration between Uniting Country SA, Port Pirie Community Kindergarten and Port Pirie Regional Council and was kindly funded through Wellbeing SA’s Healthy Towns Challenge.

The new play area built by Climbing Tree includes plenty of space for children to climb, swing, run, slide, balance and create their own adventures in a re-energised area that is hoped to prove popular amongst local and visiting families.

A Grand Opening event will be held on Friday 1 September from 3.30pm – 5.30pm including a free sausage sizzle for the community.

Garden beds around the playground will soon be planted with low shrubs which should be ready by late October. This will help to brighten and complete the space.

A sensory garden, which is being developed by the Woodward Park Upgrade Committee, will be located under the large gum tree at the front of the playground. Council will also install some new rock edging and irrigation. This should be completed by later this year.

Other upgrades for Woodward Park include the following:

  • New Pump Track – a new pump track will be located underneath the trees on the northern side of the park. The pump track has been designed for younger children and will be spray sealed with small jumps. This is due for completion by the end of October.
  • New Toilet Block – construction of a three-bay toilet block is currently underway and should be ready in October.
  • New Lawn – an area behind the nature playground will be grassed along with an area just in front of the basketball half-court. This will occur by mid-October.
  • New BBQ and Shelter – a new BBQ and shelter will be installed in front of the existing shelter. The BBQ will include disability access and will be completed later this year.
  • CCTV – four new CCTV cameras will be installed near the nature play to provide extra security.
  • Kitchen – the existing kitchen will be updated with new equipment, window blinds and doors and rendering of the exterior. This will take place in early 2024.

Council looks forward to completing these improvements at Woodward Park which will help to encourage families and the community to enjoy outdoor physical activity and recreation.
