Media Release - Celebrating 100 Years of Soroptimist International with 100 Trees

Published 25th November 2021

Earlier this month, Port Pirie Regional Council partnered with Soroptimist International Port Pirie by providing 100 new trees to plant locally to mark their 100 Year Centenary Celebrations.

In total, 50 Manchurian pear and 50 tuckeroo trees were planted on the western side of Memorial Park which fronts on to The Terrace opposite Tenth Street, helping to provide new greenery for the area as well as reducing carbon emissions.

31 people attended on the day including Soroptimist members, Girl Guides community members, local Independent MP Geoff Brock, Mayor Leon Stephens, Council’s Director Infrastructure Kathryn Johnson, Councillor Kendall Jackson and part of Council’s Parks and Recreation team.

It was a highly successful and productive morning with all 100 trees being planted within the first 45 minutes, followed by a morning tea provided by the club.

A plaque will be installed by the club at a future date marking this momentous occasion.

This project paid homage to the first project "Save the Redwoods", undertaken by the original Soroptimist club in California, USA in 1921.

Now a world-wide volunteer organisation, Soroptimist International assists at local, regional, national and international levels to help support women and girls to achieve their full potential and advocates for opportunities and issues which improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
