Memorial Oval Lighting Upgrade
There will be more opportunities to enjoy night matches at Memorial Oval as Port Pirie Regional Council plans to upgrade lighting at the facility.
Port Pirie Regional Council received a grant of $60,000 from the South Australian Cricket Association and Cricket Australia’s Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund. This will be combined with $90,000 of Council funding to deliver the Memorial Oval Lighting Upgrade Project this financial year.
The Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund (ACIF) provides funding for community cricket facility projects, with a focus on growing participation and promoting accessibility and inclusivity. Port Pirie Regional Council applied for funding after being approached by the Port Pirie Cricket Association last year.
The Association has noticed a decline in participation but the chance to play night cricket has the potential of generating interest and bringing players back to the sport. The upgraded lighting will also benefit the Port Pirie Night Baseball competition, which hosts matches at Memorial Oval.
Council will host a workshop with the Port Pirie Cricket Association, Port Pirie Night Baseball League and other clubs and associations that use Memorial Oval to ensure the lighting upgrade benefits each respective sport with the aim of growing participation.
