New Access Ramp For Port Pirie Pool

Published 9th May 2024

The Port Pirie Outdoor Swimming Pool will become accessible to more community members this summer thanks to the installation of a new disability access ramp.

Works are underway to construct the new internal ramp for the 50 metre outdoor pool located at the Port Pirie Aquatic & Leisure Centre.

A ramp provides access to the pool for all and provides equity, dignity and independence where a pool chair lifter can not. The ramp will also provide access to the pool for people with short term or minor mobility issues who would otherwise be reluctant to request assistance in using a chair lift or platform to access the pool.

Reports from managers and staff of other swimming pools that have an access ramp indicate that it also makes it easier for grandparents to accompany their grandchildren into the pool.

The concrete pouring will commence in the coming days, with the ramp expected to be ready in time for start of the 2024/25 swimming season in October 2024.

The works support Port Pirie Regional Council’s Disability Access & Inclusion Plan 2020-2024 which aims to guide Council in making community facilities and services accessible to all residents and visitors, including those with a disability or special needs.
