Our Youth, Our Festival

Published 25th September 2025

Young people across Port Pirie are stepping up, speaking out and creating something extraordinary.

Our Youth / Our Festival, a brand-new community celebration designed and delivered by students from John Pirie Secondary School, will showcase the energy, imagination, and leadership of the region’s youth. This event is driven by the students’ slogan and ethos – “Where students voices shape community choices”.

This youth-led initiative is the culmination of a collaborative project between John Pirie Secondary School and Port Pirie Regional Council, which saw Year 10 students design and pitch events for Port Pirie with support from Council staff and Elected Members. Council had originally pledged support for the winning team to bring their event to life but seeing the range of amazing ideas presented, decided to commit funding to combine these ideas into a major youth festival.

Our Youth / Our Festival will take place on Saturday 29 November from 3pm at Solomontown Beach Foreshore. The free, family-friendly under 18's youth event will feature more than a dozen youth-designed and delivered activities, spanning live music, BMX and bike stunt demos, food and market stalls, interactive games, haunted zones, water fun, creative arts, and more.

John Pirie Secondary School students are working together to turn their ideas into reality with the support from teaching staff. From concept design to logistics and promotion, they are shaping events that reflect the things they care about most: fun, inclusion, safety, and community spirit. These students and educators haven’t just invested their time, but rather, their hearts and souls into the project.

Mayor Leon Stephens praised the collaboration, stating it highlights the importance of giving young people a platform.

“This festival is youth voices in action,” Mayor Stephens said.

“The creativity, passion, and leadership of our students have driven this event from the start. Council is proud to support them in bringing their ideas to life for the whole community.”

John Pirie Secondary School principal Michael Gaunt added:

“Our students have shown incredible initiative. They’ve designed activities that not only reflect their own interests, like music, food, bikes, games, and art—but that also bring the whole community together.”

John Pirie Secondary School students shared their excitement about the event:

“I’m feeling so excited and happy the event is happening. I really want to be a part of event planning, especially for something I live, like the skate park competition. After speaking to my friends, I know they are keen to come and enjoy this day of fun,” student Jaxon Phillips said.

Fellow students Tilly Dyke and Charlotte Mummery added:

“We are very excited to organise the youth festival and are very grateful for the support from the Port Pirie Regional Council and our teachers to make it happen.”

The program will include:

  • Youth-led music and performances
  • BMX/MTB demos and competitions
  • The Pirie Fear Fest haunted experience
  • Creative workshops and interactive arts
  • Food trucks and local market stalls
  • Splash Zone water fun and games
  • Games, prizes and more

Our Youth / Our Festival is more than just an event—it’s a statement about the future of Port Pirie. By amplifying youth voices and supporting their ideas, it creates stronger connections across the community and celebrates the next generation of leaders.
