Pirie Proud Walk

Showcasing Port Pirie pride will be a walk in the park, thanks to a partnership between the Port Pirie Lions Club, Port Pirie Regional Council and John Pirie Secondary School.

The Port Pirie Lions Club has proposed a Pirie Proud Walk to showcase the stories of notable people and places connected to Port Pirie. This will be primarily self-funded by the Lions Club, with Council support for the design, site preparation and installation works.

The proposed walk would be located at the entrance to Memorial Park, at the corner of Memorial Drive and Gertrude Street, to complement existing park features and ensure high visibility. The walk is proposed to feature 11 local stories presented on plinths, story panels and site beautification.

Local youth will reflect on the stories of years past, with John Pirie Secondary School students researching the stories of local figures, including Sir Hugh Cairns, Paul Brickhill and Robert Stigwood, to contribute to the project.

Deputy Mayor Alan Zubrinich said the project would honour the people and places that make Port Pirie special.

“We are excited to support the Port Pirie Lions Club in the development of the Pirie Proud Walk – a vision that has been 10 years in the making,” he said.

“This initiative aims to recognise local heritage, strengthen community pride and provide an additional point of interest for residents and visitors.”

Council staff will work with the Port Pirie Lions Club to finalise project planning and confirm site and installation requirements.
