Pirie Voices Progress Update February 2026

Published 10th February 2026

Pirie Voices continues to grow as a community‑led initiative, bringing local voices together to shape a stronger, more connected Port Pirie. Since launching in September 2025, the project has focused on listening, learning, and empowering residents to share what matters most.

In recent months, our Coordinator and Community Conversation Leaders have spoken with individuals and groups across the region to ensure views shared represent the diverse nature of our community. Highlights include the Business Port Pirie luncheon with an update from Nyrstar’s new General Manager, Darin Cooper; an inspiring presence at Our Youth, Our Festival, where young people shared colourful, imaginative drawings celebrating what they love about Port Pirie; and the return of Partnerships for Local Action and Community Empowerment (PLACE), who previously visited during their 2025 National Listening Tour.

To ensure young people contribute to our shared vision, Pirie Voices visited Solomontown Primary School and John Pirie Secondary School at the end of Term 4 to support students in completing the community survey. These sessions encouraged students to share ideas and take pride in shaping Port Pirie’s future. Through surveys, conversations, and events, strong themes are emerging: the desire for deeper community connection, more opportunities for young people, and growing pride in Port Pirie.

“People want to feel connected, supported, and proud of their community. With Pirie Voices, we’re excited to work alongside residents to co-design action and turn those hopes into real outcomes.”

– Paula Backstrom, Pirie Voices Coordinator

Looking ahead, Pirie Voices will host more opportunities to connect, including pop‑ups and community sessions. Community groups interested in a facilitated conversation are encouraged to contact the team. On Wednesday 25 February, we will host a free community event at the Port Pirie Sporting Precinct Pirie Voices: Review, Reconnect & Ready for 2026 will share what we’ve heard, explore emerging themes, and encourage the community to help shape the next chapter of Pirie Voices. Bookings are available at pirievoices.com.

We invite everyone to stay involved your voice is key to building a vibrant, inclusive Port Pirie. Join the conversation. Be part of the change.
