Port Pirie Military Memorials
Port Pirie Regional Council and the Port Pirie RSL Sub Branch have recently completed installing four more memorial bollards in Memorial Park, Port Pirie. The bollards are located at the Royal Australian Air Force Memorial, Royal Australian Navy Memorial, Foresters Lodge Memorial and Women’s Soldiers Memorial, and completes Stage 2 of the project.
The Port Pirie RSL Sub Branch successfully secured funding from the South Australian Government, represented by Veterans SA, ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund 2020-21, which made this project possible ($2,933.00).
The ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund has operated in South Australia since 2005 and provides grant funding towards projects that commemorate ANZAC Day.
QR codes featured on each bollard bring a digital storytelling element to the memorial. Community members can use their phone camera (on an Apple or Android phone) to be connected to stories about local servicemen and women through the Australian War Memorial’s Places of Pride website.
The most recent bollards are in addition to four bollards that were installed at the South East Asian War Memorial in 2020.
This joint initiative is slowly establishing a ‘Military Trail’ that people will be able to follow via a map, brochure or digitally access. It will benefit the community, the wider Veteran community and tourists alike.
