Port Pirie Pool Upgrade September 2025
Port Pirie Regional Council is pleased to announce that the outdoor swimming pool at the Port Pirie Aquatic and Leisure Centre will reopen to the public on Friday, 10 October, following a significant infrastructure upgrade that will benefit the community for years to come.
While the opening has been slightly delayed, the Council is excited to share the positive progress made over the winter months. The project has focused on replacing the ageing pump shed and modernising the plant and equipment responsible for maintaining water quality.
Key improvements include:
- Automated water dosing systems to ensure consistent and safe water quality with minimal manual input.
- A new disposal system for pool backwash water, now connected to the SA Water sewer network.
- Improved access and safety for staff maintaining the pool, including an enclosed loading area and better chemical storage facilities.
These upgrades not only improve the day-to-day operation of the pool but also ensure a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible facility for the community.
The project did encounter some unexpected challenges, including:
- Mismatched infrastructure levels requiring redesign and additional fill.
- Discovery and removal of buried footings, pipework and a hidden SAPN sump.
- Insufficient power supply, necessitating a new power feed.
- Additional retaining wall and fencing to accommodate a larger backwash tank.
Despite these hurdles, Council is proud of the work completed and looks forward to welcoming residents back to the outdoor pool in time for the warmer weather.
Council thanks the community for their patience and understanding during the upgrade period and are confident that the new facility will serve the community well into the future.
