Powerful New SALA Exhibitions: Creative Threads & Shimmering Worlds
Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery proudly presents two compelling exhibitions for the 2025 SALA Festival - Creative Threads by the Port Pirie Embroiderers’ Guild, and Shimmering Worlds, a moving image installation by artists Liang Luscombe, Orlando Mee and Kim Munro.
Together, these exhibitions celebrate the richness of community life, creative expression, and the unseen threads - literal and metaphorical - that bind people together.
Creative Threads
A celebration of 50 years of stitch, story, and sisterhood
For more than five decades, the Port Pirie Embroiderers’ Guild has nurtured creativity, wellbeing, and friendship through the art of embroidery. Creative Threads showcases the intricate, expressive, and deeply personal works of current Guild members. From traditional linen samplers to bold, contemporary fibre art, each piece speaks to the quiet power of making, and the ways in which textile arts sustain and connect communities over time.
This heartfelt exhibition invites visitors to pause, look closely, and honour the time, patience, and care woven into every work.
Shimmering Worlds
A surreal moving image work about care, craft, and collective memory
What do Nharangga language reclamation, Cornish pasties, bingo nights, and hand-stitched quilts have in common? In Shimmering Worlds, artists Liang Luscombe, Orlando Mee and Kim Munro create an immersive cinematic experience that explores the unseen beauty of community life across the Yorke Peninsula.
Filmed on Nharangga Country, the work features evocative vignettes drawn from local groups such as the Northern Yorke Quilters, Moonta CWA, Little Claws Cat Rescue, and the Nharangga Aboriginal Progress Association. Blending documentary, digital collage, and hand-crafted props, the film transforms these everyday acts of care and creativity into portals of shimmer, glowing with meaning, memory, and connection.
Shimmering Worlds was developed through the Adelaide Film Festival EXPAND Lab and supported by a Positive Ageing Fellowship Grant from the Office for Ageing Well, Department of Human Services.
