Relocation of John Pirie Anchor

Published 29th June 2020

The John Pirie Anchor will be relocated to John Pirie Secondary School as part of an exciting heritage collaboration between the school and Port Pirie Regional Council.

Council endorsed at last week’s Council Meeting the relocation of the Anchor which is currently located in Memorial Park.

This relocation will support the school’s development of its Powerhouse Performing Arts Centre and outdoor learning space, providing students with a sense of identity and connection with the story of the John Pirie.

The school fence will be moved behind the Anchor as part of the redevelopment so the space will be publicly accessible and highlighted as an attraction in its own right. Seat walls will be installed so the public will be able to sit in the area while viewing an audio visual story of the John Pirie to understand the significance of the anchor.

The relocation will also protect the Anchor, as its current location is prone to flooding.

The John Pirie Anchor relocation will be included in the development of an integrated heritage trail which will use QR codes as the conduit to digital storytelling.
