Roads of Remembrance: Residents Invited to Help Name Our Cemetery Roads
Port Pirie Regional Council is calling on local residents to help shape the future of the Port Pirie Cemetery by suggesting meaningful names for internal roads that reflect the rich history, culture, and heritage of our community.
As part of a new initiative, Council is establishing a formal process for naming roads within the cemetery. This is a unique opportunity for the public to contribute names that honour notable individuals, commemorate historical events, or highlight culturally significant locations and stories.
Suggested criteria for naming of the Cemetery roads includes:
- Commemorating individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community (not limited to those interred in the Cemetery).
- Reflecting local history, events, or cultural heritage.
- Ensuring names are respectful and appropriate to the cemetery environment.
How to Participate:
Community members can submit their suggestions in the following ways:
- Online: Complete the Road Name Suggestion Form at www.pirie.sa.gov.au/noticeboard/consultation
- In Writing: Visit the Council Administration Office at 115 Ellen Street, Port Pirie to collect or submit a hard copy form. Forms are also available at the Port Pirie Regional Library and the Crystal Brook branch office.
The consultation period is open until 5pm on Thursday 20 November 2025, allowing six weeks for community input.
All submissions will be reviewed by a designated Council working group, and selected names will be publicly announced. Contributors of chosen names will be notified.
Let’s honour our past together – your voice can help preserve the legacy of Port Pirie for generations to come.
