Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds
As local families enjoy three new neighbourhood playgrounds, children overseas are about to receive their own play fun with love from Port Pirie.
The old playgrounds at Plenty Street, Tennyson Park and Spencer Estate (Higgins Court) were removed to make way for upgrades. However, the old playgrounds will not go to waste, as Council is working with Rotary to relocate these through the Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds (RORP) project.
Every year in Australia, thousands of unwanted playgrounds are sent to landfill. Although these playgrounds have reached the end of their useful life by our standards, they are still safe and structurally sound and able to be used by children in developing nations, many of whom have never seen nor experienced the joy of a playground.
The Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds project has so far relocated over 350 playgrounds to nations like Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, Fiji, Uganda, Nepal, the Philippines and Tanzania. Ten South Australian councils have already donated playgrounds through the RORP Project including Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Murray Bridge, Charles Sturt, Prospect and Mount Barker.
New playgrounds have been installed at Plenty Street, Tennyson Park and Spencer Estate featuring new play equipment as well as softfall and edging.
