Special Announcement: Port Pirie Named as Host of 2027 South Australian Masters Games!
Port Pirie Regional Council is proud to announce it has secured the rights to host the 2027 South Australian Masters Games.
The 2027 event will mark the first time Port Pirie has hosted the Games since 2019, building on a proud history of delivering the iconic multi-sport festival across eight previous instalments since first hosting in 2000.
Deputy Mayor Alan Zubrinich welcomed the announcement, saying:
“This is an exciting milestone for our region. The enthusiasm shown by our sporting clubs and community during the bid process proved just how passionate Port Pirie is about sport and major events,” Deputy Mayor Zubrinich said.
“Port Pirie is South Australia’s regional sporting capital, and securing the 2027 South Australian Masters Games is a testament to the strength of our community, our elite sporting culture and our proven ability to deliver high-quality regional events. We look forward to welcoming participants and visitors and showcasing our region on the statewide stage,” added Deputy Mayor Zubrinich.
From grassroots participation to producing elite athletes, our region has always embraced sport as a core part of community life. Port Pirie’s rich sporting history includes producing numerous professional athletes across football, basketball, netball, swimming and more, while also supporting an exceptionally broad range of sporting clubs and codes.
The region’s strong volunteer base, modern sporting facilities and diverse sports offering all played a key role in the success of Council’s bid. The bidding process saw strong engagement from local sporting organisations, with around 30 sporting codes indicating interest in participating – highlighting Port Pirie’s exceptional event capacity and community cohesion.
Hosting the South Australian Masters Games is expected to deliver substantial economic and community outcomes, including:
- Increased visitation across the region with several thousand visitors expected across the event period
- Direct economic benefits for accommodation, hospitality, retail and services
- Activation of local sporting precincts
- Opportunities for local clubs to fundraise, collaborate and grow
- Strengthening of Port Pirie’s reputation as a regional events hub.
Port Pirie Regional Council would like to thank Sport SA for the opportunity to host the 2027 South Australian Masters Games. We acknowledge the trust placed in the region and are genuinely excited to bring the event to fruition, working closely with Sport SA, local sporting clubs and the wider community to deliver an outstanding Games experience for all involved.
