Strong Turnout to Support Healthier Sports Clubs

Published 4th March 2026

Port Pirie Regional Council is pleased with the success of last Thursday night’s Good Sports presentation, which saw an excellent representation from across the region’s sporting community.

The session reached 28 sporting clubs and associations, reflecting a strong commitment from local sport leaders to create healthier, safer and more supportive club environments.

Council extends its appreciation to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and program partners for delivering an informative and engaging workshop covering vaping awareness, gambling harm prevention, and practical steps clubs can take to promote positive culture and wellbeing.

The event also delivered immediate results, with four new clubs joining the Good Sports program and five clubs signing up to Here for the Game. These additions strengthen Port Pirie’s growing network of proactive, health‑focused sporting organisations and highlight the impact of clubs working together to support their members.

Port Pirie Regional Council acknowledges and thanks all clubs and volunteers who attended, noting that the success of the evening would not have been possible without their enthusiasm and ongoing dedication to nurturing positive sporting experiences.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation also acknowledged the participation of local sports clubs at the event:

“We would also like to thank those who joined our presentation on Thursday night. We were very happy with the large number of clubs and associations that came along and we hope they each took something useful away from the session.”

With continued interest in both programs, Council encourages any clubs who were unable to attend – or who would like more information – to reach out and get involved. By adopting initiatives such as Good Sports and Here for the Game, clubs can access free resources, expert support and practical tools that help build stronger, more connected and inclusive communities.

Here for the Game

As a South Australian Government initiative, Here for the Game aims to disrupt the normalisation of gambling in sport by addressing the growing presence of sports betting and gambling in our community, and the harms associated with it.

To date, more than 150 community clubs across South Australia have joined the program, and more are being invited to take part. The program offers practical resources to help educate members, set positive examples for young people, and prevent gambling-related harm.
