Tourism & Arts Centre 30th Anniversary

Published 20th May 2024

Port Pirie Regional Council is thrilled to announce the celebration of the Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre’s 30th anniversary on Tuesday 28 May 2024. This landmark event honours three decades of cultural heritage and serving our vibrant community. Join us for a special day dedicated to exploring the history of the Centre.

Since its official opening on 28 May 1994 by the Federal Minister of Tourism and Arts, the Honourable Michael Lee, the Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre has stood as a beacon of cultural heritage in the region. The Centre, a $1.7 million redevelopment project, was built around the former Port Pirie Railway Station, purchased by the Port Pirie Regional Council (then known as Port Pirie City Council) from the State Transport Authority in April 1992. This transformation turned an old railway station into a dynamic hub celebrating Port Pirie's association with shipping, rail transport, and mining.

Visitors on this special anniversary can explore the Port Pirie Visitor Information Centre, the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery and meet Shakka the Shark, a beloved local attraction. To commemorate this milestone, free guided tours will be offered at 11:30am and 2:00pm, providing an in-depth look into the fascinating history of the Centre and its impact on the community. The guided tours will explore the history of the Centre, highlighting its journey from a railway station to a vibrant tourism and arts facility.

"For three decades, the Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre has been more than just a destination—it's been a storyteller, revealing the hidden gems and rich history of our region to visitors from near and far,” said Natalie Waite, Tourism Team Leader for Port Pirie Regional Council. “This anniversary is a celebration of our ongoing mission to connect people with the stories and culture of Port Pirie."

Be part of this special event as we honour the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future of the Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre. Whether you are a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, this event promises to be an enriching experience for all.
