WHS Merit Award
Port Pirie Regional Council is proud to receive a Merit Award for Work Health & Safety Best Practice at the 2023/24 LGA Scheme Awards.
The Merit Award was presented to Council for its Workzone Traffic Management Online Form.
It follows Port Pirie Regional Council’s success at the Local Government Professionals SA’s 23rd Annual Leadership Excellence Award, where Council won the Excellence in Cross Council Collaboration award as part of the group of councils known as the Flinders Alliance.
Port Pirie Regional Council introduced online WorkZone Traffic Management (WZTM) forms to assist outdoor workers in the Infrastructure department. These forms were formerly physical documents completed manually by workers at outdoor worksites to ensure that all worksites are safe for both workers and the community, hazards are identified and all workers are provided with clear, consistent information about the site.
The online form provides greater efficiency for Council employees in the field to complete, leading to better record keeping and safer work sites.
Port Pirie Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Ackland commended all who were involved in the project, including Council’s Work Health and Safety, Infrastructure and Information & Communication Technology teams.
“This Merit Award is great recognition for the ingenuity of our employees to use technology to make a necessary task much more efficient and easier to undertake,” he said.
“The online WorkZone Traffic Management form promotes safety and sound work practices. By ensuring our worksites are safe, we are ensuring both our workforce and the wider community are protected.”

Port Pirie Regional Council staff Peter Lock (Operations Manager), Rosie Gibbins (Work Health & Safety Officer) and Darren Stevens (ICT Manager) with the LGA Scheme Merit Award. These three departments (Infrastructure, Work Health and Safety and Information and Communication Technology) collaborated on the Workzone Traffic Management online form project.
