Native Plant Giveaway May 2025
Port Pirie Regional Council is excited to again offer residents free native plant seedlings following the success of the inaugural giveaway event in April 2024.
The Native Plant Giveaway is funded by the Government of South Australia as part of a four-year, $5.7 million partnership for greening Port Pirie. This initiative is designed to help beautify our community, reduce airborne lead dust, increase biodiversity and is also a great opportunity to introduce native flora into your garden.
The event will be held on Sunday 4 May 2025 and will be open to all residents in the Port Pirie Regional Council area.
Plant packs will include 6 native plant seedlings which will be randomly selected from a wide range of 20 attractive and hardy native species. These plants include Eremophila varieties, Desert Flame, Blueberry Lily, Australian Pig Face, Billy Buttons and many other species.
These plant species are not only beautiful but have also been sourced locally and adapted to the local climate. This means less watering once established, which makes them easier to care for, while supporting local wildlife.
Residents wishing to view these plant species established can view the demonstration gardens located at:
- SA Water Depot, 238 Senate Road
- Catherine Commons Park, Read Street
- Spencer Estate, Higgins Court
Residents can collect their seedlings between 9am – 3pm on Sunday 4 May from the Port Pirie Regional Council Works Depot, located at 20 Broadstock Road, Port Pirie. Proof of residential address may be required upon collection and plants are limited to one pack per household.
There will be no pre-registrations, so residents are encouraged to come along early to ensure they don’t miss out.
A free sausage sizzle will also be offered from 10am-2pm as part of the plant giveaway fun.
