Phoenix Park Wetlands Update October 2025
Phoenix Park Wetlands is set to undergo a springtime transformation as part of the Port Pirie Greening Program.
Almost 25,000 plants will be planted throughout the wetlands in October/November (subject to favourable weather conditions). This includes plants propagated in a variety of species (including a mix of trees, shrubs, sedge, groundcover, mat and grass).
These plantings will be supported by over 11 kilometres of irrigation line. An irrigation shed has been installed on site ready for use.
The Port Pirie Greening Program is funded by the Government of South Australia as part of a four-year, $5.7 million partnership that aims to minimise lead exposure pathways, beautify the community and increase biodiversity.
Phoenix Park Wetlands is one of the two largest individual sites within the built area of Port Pirie likely to contribute to the movement of dust, hence its suitability to the Port Pirie Greening Program. It was identified in the Greening Port Pirie – Landscaping Concept Design which was released for community consultation in January 2024.
New internal footpaths within the wetland area have been completed to improve user safety and access, including 480 metres of unsealed walking trails constructed through the 2024 Port Pirie Work Hardening Program. This program was a partnership between Port Pirie Regional Council and local employment and training organisations with the aim of giving participants skills and nationally recognised qualifications in a real-life work environment.
The Wetlands project will be supported by another Work Hardening Program this month.
Port Pirie Regional Council developed a Phoenix Park Wetlands Master Plan in 2015 to develop the wetlands environment. Improvements identified in the Master Plan, including park furniture, public art, furniture and boardwalks, will be considered for future works.
