Pirie West Greening September 2025

Published 23rd September 2025

More than 6000 new plants and trees will invigorate The Terrace before the end of the year.

Port Pirie Regional Council is excited to confirm that a total of 6297 plants and 90 trees will be planted along a portion of The Terrace as part of the Pirie West Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) Project. These plantings will focus on the areas near Port Pirie West Primary School (on The Terrace, between Memorial Drive and Mary Elie Street).

This project is part of the Port Pirie Greening Program, which is funded by the Government of South Australia as part of a four-year, $5.7 million partnership that aims to minimise lead exposure pathways, beautify the community and increase biodiversity.

The Pirie West WSUD Project includes streetscape measures to increase tree planting and canopy cover in the walkable areas adjacent to Port Pirie West Primary School with the aim of reducing dust in air. These plantings are supported by Water Sensitive Urban Design infrastructure, which uses stormwater as a sustainable, water-efficient form of irrigation.

Planting is expected to take place in September/October. This will include the replacement of the removed itchy bomb trees with more suitable species for the environment.

Port Pirie Regional Council is using this opportunity to upgrade surrounding infrastructure. Other works in the area include:

  • The Pirie West Oval car park
  • Pirie West bus stop
  • Works on The Terrace/Memorial Drive roundabout
  • School pedestrian crossings.
  • Road resurfacing.
