PPRC Signs Small Business Friendly Council Charter

Published 3rd September 2025

Port Pirie Regional Council has officially committed to supporting local small businesses by signing the Small Business Friendly Council (SBFC) Charter, a state-wide initiative led by the South Australian Small Business Commissioner.

By signing the Charter, Council has pledged to deliver practical actions across three key areas:

  • Timely payments – ensuring small business suppliers are paid within 15 days of receiving a correct invoice.
  • Dispute resolution – supporting fair, prompt resolution of disputes through access to the Small Business Commissioner’s expedited processes.
  • Red tape reduction – identifying and implementing annual projects to reduce administrative and regulatory barriers for small businesses.

This commitment reflects Council’s vision to strengthen the local economy by creating a fair and supportive environment where small businesses can thrive. As a member of the SBFC Program, Council will continue to champion collaboration, transparency and local innovation.

South Australian Small Business Commissioner, Dan van Holst Pellekaan, praised Council’s leadership:

“I commend Port Pirie Regional Council’s strong commitment to supporting its local small businesses. Delivering on the Small Business Friendly Council charter will make doing business in and around Port Pirie better in many ways, including improved cashflow and less red tape.”

Mayor Leon Stephens said the initiative demonstrates Council’s commitment to its business community:

“By signing this Charter, Council is proudly demonstrating how much we value our local business owners and are committed to helping them succeed. Their success underpins local jobs, growth, and the future prosperity of our region.”

Acting CEO Chris Davey and Director Corporate and Community Luigi Mesisca said the Charter would provide practical benefits for local operators:

“We know how important it is to make it easier for small businesses to work with Council. From faster payments to reducing red tape, this Charter gives us a structured way to deliver improvements that matter. We’re proud to take this step and look forward to building stronger partnerships with local businesses.”

About the Small Business Friendly Council Program

The SBFC Program was first launched in 2017 and has recently been revitalised following extensive consultation with councils. It provides a framework for local government to work closely with small businesses, ensuring they remain accessible, engaged and proactive in strengthening the business community.
