Council and TLAP Greening Partnership

Published 2nd March 2022

Port Pirie Regional Council is proud to partner with the Targeted Lead Abatement Program (TLAP) on a series of dust management and planting works as part of the overall Greening Port Pirie program.

These projects compliment the State Government’s announcement of a $6.1 million Greening Port Pirie program yesterday to support a range of greening initiatives between Council, the State Government, TLAP and the community.

It also aligns with priorities in Council’s Community Plan 2020-2025 to improve the health, wellbeing, environment and perceptions of Port Pirie.

Our current projects involve Council and TLAP tidying up sites, spreading mulch and planting more trees and shrubs this week in an effort to manage and control dust over a long term period. These activities will also help with future maintenance.

Works include:

  • George Street Parklands – removing dead trees and old stockpiles of material, spreading mulch and planting new trees.
  • Wandearah Road corridor (Pirie Rail Express, next to Port Pirie Library, through to Donaldson Basketball Stadium) – clearing an access track along the northern boundary of the netball courts, removing any dead trees and suckers/saplings and levelling uneven ground. New trees and vegetation will be planted and spaced out for easier maintenance in the future.
  • Ellen Street corridor – mulching of garden beds/medians between David Street and Nyrstar entrance.
  • The Terrace (adjacent to Tennis Centre) – spreading of mulch to manage dust at the entrance to the Phoenix Park wetlands.
