Port Pirie Named Grey Nomad Award Finalist

Published 19th January 2024

Port Pirie has long been known as the City of Friendly People – now, we are shortlisted for an award to recognise that very fact.

Port Pirie has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Best Grey Nomad Friendly Town Category of the 2023 Grey Nomad Awards. These awards recognise government, private and not-for-profit organisations that welcome mature age travellers and support positive ageing through a combination of soft adventure and social inclusion.

A strong appeal is Port Pirie’s status as an RV Friendly Town through the Campervan Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) RV Friendly program. This provides a range of benefits including free 24 hour parking near the CBD for RV self-contained travellers and free 48 hour parking on the outskirts of the city as well as caravan parks and a range of public amenities and essential facilities.

Award judges also recognised the wealth of experiences and attractions Port Pirie offers to the grey nomad traveller, celebrating history, heritage and natural beauty alongside public amenities, community events and attractions.

The Port Pirie Visitor Information Centre was also highlighted in the award submission as the first stop for visitors. Friendly, knowledgeable staff provide valuable information to help tourists to make the most of their time in the region while visitors can also visit the local tourist attractions, view an exhibition at the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery or purchase some local produce or gifts to remember their stay.

The Best Grey Nomad Friendly Town is one of 14 award categories in the Grey Nomad Awards and is judged through a written submission process. National and state winners will be announced at a gala dinner celebration on Friday 8 March 2024.
