Residents encouraged to join Garage Sale Trail

Published 16th October 2023

Port Pirie Regional Council is encouraging residents from across the region to host a garage sale and jump on board this national event in November.

Boasting garage sales across Australia on 11-12 and 18-19 November, this event is a great chance for residents to turn their unwanted items into cash and shop for pre-loved items at bargain prices.

With support from Council, this will be the first time that our region will take part in the Garage Sale Trail and it is hoped that many residents will take part to ensure a successful event.

Anyone can host a sale, including households, community groups, charities, schools, streets or groups of friends.

With free registration, how-to guides, promotional resources and even touch-free PayPal QR code payments, garage sales have been made easy for sellers over two big weekends.

More sales means more bargains and there really will be something for everyone; from fashion to mid-century furniture, cookware to children’s toys, vinyl, tools and more.

Selling or shopping at garage sales is a fun and simple action we can take to reduce our carbon footprint. The Garage Sale Trail helps neighbours and community members connect, make money and keep useful items out of landfill.

Before the sale weekends there will be a series of online talks featuring an all-star cast of experts and familiar faces sharing their sustainable living tips that are kind on both planet and pocket.

Featuring presenters Barry du Bois and Veronica Milsom—alongside experts in secondhand selling, styling and the circular economy—the Trail Tutorials are hosted online and are free to attend on 28-29 October.

Shopping aside, the Garage Sale Trail program is free for residents thanks to the support of Port Pirie Regional Council.

Garage Sale Trail is a not-for-profit social enterprise founded by Sydney mates, Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder. It seeks to educate Australians on the importance of reuse, and the need to take individual responsibility for the impact of our consumption habits whilst also building stronger, more connected and more resilient communities.

Now into its teenage years, Garage Sale Trail has grown from a grass roots idea in Bondi Beach where it started in 2010 to being powered by over 80 councils nationally and supported by PayPal and the Victorian state government.
