Mayor Leon Stephens, on behalf of Port Pirie Regional Council, honours and pays respect to distinguished actor and Port Piriean Lillian Crombie following her passing last week.

The proud Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara woman was born and raised in Port Pirie, where she trained in classical ballet at the Port Pirie Ballet School before attending the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).

These experiences laid the foundation for a stellar career in stage and screen. Lillian is best known for her roles in the Baz Luhrmann film ‘Australia’ and television series ‘The Secret Life Of Us’ and ‘Mystery Road’.

Lillian was a trail blazer for First Nations communities and passionate about supporting young people within her community of Port Pirie. She was instrumental in seeking funding from Country Arts SA for young Aboriginal people to learn dancing and spoke to Council staff just before Christmas about organising further dance classes – something Council is keen to pursue in her honour.

Lillian was a much loved and comedic MC for the Port Pirie NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony in 2022, entertaining the crowd with her amazing comic timing. She was also a big supporter of the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery, often attending openings and events.

Lillian’s generosity saw her give back to communities through the establishment of the Lillian Crombie School of Dance and Drama and the Lillian Crombie Foundation.

Mayor Leon Stephens paid tribute to Lillian, who he fondly remembers from their time attending Solomontown Primary School together as children.

“On behalf of Port Pirie Regional Council, I send my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Lillian Crombie” Mayor Stephens said.

“Our lives were all the richer for Lillian’s involvement in the arts and our community. She has entertained us on stage and screen and fostered a love of dance and drama in the next generation.

Port Pirie is extremely proud to have produced not only an incredible talent on the national and international stage, but also a warm and generous person who has inspired and touched the lives of so many. I would love to see an award named in Lillian’s honour aimed at excellence achieved from our indigenous children providing her family are happy to do so.

RIP Auntie Lil.”
