Work Hardening Project Supports Riverbank Precinct Stage 1 Works

Published 7th October 2023

Port Pirie Regional Council has commenced works on the Port Pirie Riverbank Precinct Master Plan (Stage 1), with many of the improvements due for completion before Christmas. This project will also provide an innovative approach to works delivery, by engaging unemployed and underemployed local people.

Works started last month with the refurbishment of the Solomontown Beach toilet block. Facilities, including disabled toilets, will be modernised with new fittings and fixtures as well as the addition of baby change facilities in both the male and female toilets.

Improvements scheduled for completion before Christmas include:

  • Pump track
  • Basketball court
  • Picnic shelters and park furniture
  • Toilet block refurbishment
  • Micro forest
  • Promenade path and levee (eastern and western sections).

The community will be invited to share in the journey with the Port Pirie Work Hardening Project. This eight week program will give participants the opportunity to gain a Certificate II in Resources & Infrastructure Work Preparation, along with other skills and certificates to support their future career progression. Participants will also have the opportunity to apply these skills in a real-life work environment by contributing to the delivery of the Riverbank Precinct Stage 1 works.

Council has partnered with Carey Training, Workskil Australia, Regional Development Yorke & Mid North and Workforce Australia – Local Jobs Mid North to deliver this incredible opportunity. There may be further opportunities to roll out Work Hardening Projects during future Council major projects.

Further upgrades that will be completed after Christmas include:

  • Nature play space
  • Promenade path and levee (middle section)
  • Beach shelter and deck.

Construction of these elements is planned to commence in March 2024 to allow the community the opportunity to enjoy the beach and foreshore areas during the summer school holiday period.

Priorities for Stage 1 of the Port Pirie Riverbank Precinct Master Plan were determined through a community consultation process where the community was invited to share ideas and provide feedback on the concept plans.

The $2.4m project includes approx. $1.6m from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and $570,000 from Port Pirie Regional Council. The Riverbank Precinct development will have many wellbeing, social, environmental and lifestyle benefits.
