Free Hard Waste Disposal Success

Published 11th February 2021

Residents have cleaned out their houses and sheds in droves and shown their support to Council’s Free Hard Waste Disposal Day on 3rd January. The final review of items collected has been completed and Council would like to thank the community for their support.

A total of 579 vehicles attended the Port Pirie Waste Transfer Station and 176 vehicles attended the Crystal Brook Waste Transfer Station on the day.

Items collected on the day between both sites included:

  • 565 mattresses and lounges
  • 45 whitegoods
  • 1043 tyres
  • Approx 240 tonnes of concrete
  • Approx 10-15 tonnes of timber
  • Approx 20-30 tonnes of steel

The free disposal days generate great community benefits including a reduction in illegal dumping and unsightly premises.

Council hosts two Free Hard Waste Disposal Days per year to help residents to clear household items too large to fit inside the normal red-lidded waste bins. The next Free Hard Waste Day will be held on Sunday 8 August 2021.

There will also be Free Green Waste Disposal Days on the last Sundays in August, September and October to encourage residents to clear their properties ahead of the next fire danger season.

Council understands that not everyone can attend on the allocated day and has responded to community feedback to implement a voucher system. Those unable to attend due to work commitments can contact Council and be provided with a voucher to dispose of their hard waste or green waste at a more convenient time.
