Australia Day Citizenships

Published 25th January 2023

Ten Port Pirie residents will become our newest citizens during a special citizenship ceremony at Solomontown Beach this Australia Day, 26 January 2023.

The ceremony, to be held on Nukunu Country, will be one of the key events in Port Pirie's Australia Day celebrations.

Mayor Leon Stephens said: “Our new citizens are from 6 countries, including Malaysia, Oman, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the U.S.S.R. and will join thousands of other Australians who are celebrating their citizenship. Our new citizens will contribute their skills and cultural diversity to our local community and enrich it through their hard work and participation in public life.”

Mayor Stephens will preside over the ceremony, which will also include a community breakfast, games and entertainment for the whole family, Australia Day Award presentations and the opportunity to meet ambassador SA Senior Australian of the Year 2022, Mark Le Messurier.

Other events to celebrate Australia Day in the region will include community breakfast events in Crystal Brook's Adelaide Square and Redhill's Mortimer Park from 8am.

“I encourage everyone to not only enjoy Australia Day festivities, but to take time and reflect on what it means to be an Australian citizen: our shared values, our national history, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, and our commitment to reconciliation.

“Think about how you can become more involved with your local community, to help make it a better place every day,” said Mayor Stephens.
